Over 40,000 casualties have occurred from the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. A large number of these are serious injuries resulting in permanent disabilities and requiring long-term care. While the government is doing what it can, numerous unmet needs remain. Many of these can be met more efficiently and with less stress to service members and their families by private organizations such as the WHF. A typical stay for a patient at Walter Reed Medical Center is six months to two years, usually a combination of inpatient and outpatient care. The financial and emotional burden placed upon the individual and their families is unimaginable. This is where the WHF can help, providing support to service members and their families such as:
    •
Transportation costs, meals, lodging, and other travel related expenses for family members to visit hospitals and rehab centers.
    •
Child care expenses incurred as a result of injury, or simply to enable a spouse to visit the hospital.
    •
The purchase of new, or modifications to, vehicles to accommodate a service member’s injury.
    •
Home modifications to accommodate injuries.
    •
Scholarships for spouses and children of wounded or deceased.
    •
Job training for the wounded.
    •
Other financial needs approved by the WHF.
The WHF will provide funding to other not-for-profit organizations that are also providing services to the wounded and their families. These organizations have infrastructures in place to support service members. Many, like the Yellow Ribbon Fund (yellowribbonfund.org), service our local wounded and their families for long periods of time before they are able to return to Kern County.
